Personal Statement

I was born in Liverpool in 1946 and brought up and educated there before completing a degree in Economics at Manchester University in 1967. An academic career followed such that, with minor deviations, my working life was spent at the two ends of the East Lancashire Road.  A position at Manchester was followed by six very enjoyable years at Liverpool University before returning to Manchester in 1980 as Professor of Economics. I retired, notionally, in 2008.

A commitment to education has been a central feature of our family life. My late wife taught secondary science before converting to primary teaching and working as a special needs advisor for Trafford Borough Council.  My daughter teaches secondary geography in Leicestershire and I have high hopes that at least two of my grandchildren will follow career paths in teaching.

The family moved to West Kirby in 2013, which is when we joined the congregation at St Bridget’s.  I became a PCC member in 2021 ( I had previously been a PCC member and Treasurer at St Mary’s, Bowdon) and you may see me on side-person’s duty if you are up and about early enough on a Sunday.

Among my pastimes are gardening and walking, the engineering of small-scale live steam engines, sailing a diminutive keel boat at West Kirby Sailing Club, and, of course, supporting Liverpool Football Club.

To be a governor of any school is a privilege and a responsibility.  I am looking forward very much to being part of the team.
