At St. Bridget’s, our vision for teaching reading is to nurture confident, fluent readers who develop a lifelong love of books and learning.
Throughout their journey with us, children will build excellent phonic knowledge and skills, enabling them to decode words with accuracy and confidence. We aim to foster fluency and precision in reading across a wide range of contexts, supporting learning in all areas of the curriculum.
Pupils will develop a broad and rich vocabulary, alongside strong comprehension skills that allow them to engage deeply with a variety of texts. Through exposure to a diverse and carefully chosen range of literature, children will gain extensive knowledge and develop the motivation to read for both study and pleasure. Our goal is for every child to leave St. Bridget’s not only as a capable reader but as someone who finds joy, meaning, and inspiration in the written word.

How we teach your child to read and write
St. Bridget's C of E Primary Poetry Anthologies
We are pleased to share our poetry anthologies with you. Each year group studies poems from each anthology as the year progresses in order to ensure that our children experience a range of poetry. Please note that the EYFS poems are being collated and will be added shortly.
There is also a focus on performing poetry that progresses as the children journey through school. Where appropriate, our poems are also linked to our Reading Spine. As the children read and experience the poems, they will be immersed in more language and poetry types which are then discussed afterwards.
We hope you enjoy the poems as much as we do as we grow our love of reading and of poetry.
