Maths

At St. Bridget’s, we aim to nurture confident, capable mathematicians throughout each child’s learning journey. Our vision is rooted in developing a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts, enabling children to make meaningful connections across different areas of the subject. We want our pupils to see mathematics not as isolated skills, but as a coherent and interconnected discipline.

We focus on equipping children with a broad range of skills to use and apply mathematics in practical and meaningful ways. Fluent knowledge and quick recall of number facts and the number system form a strong foundation for their learning, supporting them as they progress through increasingly complex concepts.

Problem-solving lies at the heart of our approach. We encourage children to show initiative and creativity in tackling problems in a variety of contexts, including unfamiliar or challenging scenarios. Independent thinking, perseverance, and a belief in their own ability are qualities we strive to instil in every learner.

We also place great value on learning from mistakes. Children are encouraged to embrace errors and false starts as opportunities for growth, developing resilience and a growth mindset along the way. As they progress, they learn to reason logically, generalise their thinking, and make sense of their solutions with clarity and confidence.

Fluency in both written and mental calculations is a key priority, along with a strong grasp of mathematical techniques and vocabulary. Ultimately, we aim to foster not just competence but a genuine passion for mathematics—a subject that empowers children and enriches their understanding of the world.

Calculation Policy:

Please find below a very useful document for download or to view online.

The document headed 'Calculations Policy'  breaks down for each year methods that are taught in the school. The document headed MNP Calculation Policy aligns with the Calculation Policy and shows the progression in calculation used in our textbook based approach to teaching for mastery.

These can be a useful aid for parents helping their children at home.

Here you will find a number of documents to help you understand the progression and sequence of teaching in maths. We use the vehicle of Maths No Problem alongside NCETM resources to support our delivery of a mastery curriculum for maths.
The progression maps will help you to see where key concepts are met on a child's journey through the school and the schemes of work outline how the maths curriculum is mapped out during the year. These schemes are a suggested overview and are adapted as needed by teachers based on their knowledge of the children.

Mastering Number EYFS and KS1

Mastering Number is a project developed by the NCETM to support the development of fluency in number. We use this project alongside our teaching for mastery approach.
'This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.' NCETM
Mastering Number KS2

Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum, and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This project enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense. (NCETM)

We are excited to have been one of the first schools taking part in the NCETM Mastering Number at Key Stage 2. This supports our continued work in developing automaticity in multiplicative reasoning.

Mathematical Vocabulary

We recognise the importance of using precise mathematical language and terminology with children. The documents below will support you in understanding some of the mathematical language your child will meet in school.
Mathletics
Mathletics is a fun learning resource which the children have their own personal logon to. Online they can battle against individuals all over the globe and compete for the leader board spaces and could even appear in the top 100 in the UK or the world. Teachers can set specific tasks for specific classes/children to steer their learning in the direction needed. This is a great resource and we encourage all the children to logon to climb up the leader board and earn certificates.

Mathletics is a world phenomenom with thousands of children playing across our truly globalised world. They can compete against children all over the world in real time! Maths, learning and fun have never been so available and closely linked. here are league tables that exist within the class, year, school, region, country, continent and worldwide.
