History

At St. Bridget’s, our vision for history is to inspire a deep curiosity about the past and to help children understand how it has shaped the world they live in today. Throughout their journey with us, our children will develop an excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events, and contexts from a wide range of historical periods. They will explore key historical concepts and processes, gaining a strong foundation in the discipline of history.

We aim for our pupils to think critically about history and communicate their ideas with confidence and clarity. They will be taught to express their understanding in styles appropriate to different audiences, using historical vocabulary effectively and accurately.

Children will consistently be encouraged to support, evaluate, and challenge their own views—and those of others—using detailed, appropriate, and accurate historical evidence. This evidence will be drawn from a wide range of sources, teaching them to analyse and interpret history with confidence and rigour.

Our curriculum promotes deep thinking, reflection, debate, and discussion. Pupils will learn to evaluate the past by formulating and refining their own questions and lines of enquiry, developing into thoughtful and reflective learners.

We strive to foster a genuine passion for history. Through enthusiastic engagement, pupils will develop a strong sense of curiosity about the past and an appreciation for the ways in which people interpret historical events differently. This awareness helps them to understand the complexity of history and its relevance to their own lives.

Finally, our children will learn to respect historical evidence, making robust and critical use of it to support their explanations and judgements. They will be encouraged to embrace challenge, taking on high-quality research opportunities across a range of topics that stretch their thinking and deepen their understanding of history.
