Year 3 – Spring Term Curriculum Overview
In the Spring term, we have a whole-school focus on Our Community. Our learning in Spring 1 will centre on Social Justice, explored through the themes of empathy, belonging and understanding others. In Spring 2, the children will take part in an exciting STEAM-focused curriculum, developing curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on learning.
During Spring 1, these important themes will be explored through the excellent texts Coming to England by Floella Benjamin and Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell. These books will act as a springboard for creative writing, thoughtful discussion and reflection. In the second half of the term, our learning will be driven by STEAM, where children will engage in practical activities that link science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. Our core text for this half term will be The Iron Man, which will support both our literacy and wider curriculum learning.
In History, our focus will be on the Anglo-Saxons, learning about why they migrated to Britain and how their legacy still influences life today. In Geography, children will explore energy use, with a particular focus on energy consumption in the UK and the advantages and challenges of renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
In Religious Education, we continue to explore Christianity alongside our Year 3 world faith, Hinduism. In Spring 1, children will consider the impact of Christianity on individuals, with a focus on the sacrament of Baptism. They will also learn about the importance of rules and laws within Hinduism and what it is like to be a Hindu in today’s society. After half term, we will explore beliefs about the existence and role of God in both religions, before learning about the events of Holy Week and beginning preparations for our Year 3 Easter Service.
In Science, the children will investigate rocks, soils and fossils, as well as learning about light, including reflections and the factors that affect shadows. In PE and Games, children will focus on dance and health and fitness, while also developing teamwork, problem-solving and coordination through Basketball and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA). In Art, pupils will take part in a drawing unit, developing their shading skills and drawing techniques to create detailed botanical-inspired artwork. In Design and Technology, children will explore mechanical systems by designing and creating their own pneumatic toys. In Music, pupils will create a composition inspired by an animation, based around the theme of mountains. In Spanish, children will develop their vocabulary by learning about colours and shapes.
In Spring 1, the children will take part in an exciting Sports Festival, developing their resilience, perseverance and teamwork by participating in a range of activities including indoor athletics, dodgeball and tennis. In Spring 2, children will also have the opportunity to explore their emotions through work with Flourish, supporting their emotional understanding and resilience.
