Music

At St. Bridget’s, our vision for music education is to inspire creativity, expression, and a lifelong love of music in every child. Throughout their journey with us, children will develop a rich and rapidly expanding musical repertoire, which they will use to create original, imaginative, and fluent compositions and performances that reflect their individuality.

Our approach is rooted in building deep musical understanding. We place a strong emphasis on developing aural perception and internalisation, alongside solid theoretical knowledge and technical expertise. This foundation enables pupils to engage with music at a high level, whether they are performing, composing, or appraising.

We encourage children to explore and appreciate a wide variety of musical traditions and genres. Through this exposure, they gain a deep respect for the diversity of musical expression across cultures and time periods. Pupils also learn to understand the concept of musical provenance—the historical, social, and cultural contexts that shape music—and how this influences the wide array of styles they encounter.

An important aspect of our vision is enabling children to communicate their musical understanding clearly and confidently. We support them in developing the ability to give precise written and verbal explanations, using accurate and appropriate musical terminology.

Above all, we aim to foster a genuine passion for music. Through participation in a wide range of musical activities—both within and beyond the classroom—children grow in confidence, creativity, and commitment, developing a love for music that will stay with them throughout their lives.
