Year 3 – Summer Term Curriculum Overview
In the Summer term, we have a whole-school focus on Our Environment. This allows us to explore both History and Geography, alongside many other curriculum subjects, while developing a deeper understanding of the world around us.
In Geography, we will study the River Dee and investigate the erosion of our local coastline, exploring why our coast is changing and the impact this has on the environment and local communities. In History, we will continue our learning from the Spring term on the Anglo-Saxons, focusing on the overarching enquiry question: Did the Anglo-Saxons settle on the Wirral?
In English, our learning will be driven by high-quality texts including The Firework Maker’s Daughter, Voices in the Park and Kensuke’s Kingdom, which will inspire our writing and reading discussions.
Across the wider curriculum, in Science, children will explore plant reproduction and investigate grip strength, developing their scientific enquiry skills. In PE and Games, pupils will build their skills in dance, tag rugby and athletics, culminating in a celebration of their achievements during Sports Day. In Design and Technology, children will focus on cooking and nutrition, designing and making a seasonal tart.
In Religious Education, we will explore the questions Why is it important to ‘lead a good life’? and To what extent are communities shaped by religion?, drawing on both Christian and Hindu beliefs. In Art, pupils will take part in a sculpture unit, creating a 3D playground, while in Computing, they will focus on programming, writing algorithms and creating programs that use a range of events to trigger sequences of actions.
To support your child’s learning, you can help them practise their Year 3/4 statutory spellings, which are essential for their writing development. Additional reading linked to our topics is always encouraged. Regularly accessing weekly homework on Google Classroom and supporting your child with tasks sent home will also help to reinforce their learning in school.
