Year 5

Year 5 Curriculum Overview (Spring Term)

In the Spring term we have the whole school focus on ‘Our Community’.We have planned the exciting topic of Social Justice exploring diversity and tolerance. We will look at these through the lens of the excellent book 'I am Malala' which will be our springboard for our creative writing. Later in the term, we then focus on STEM, looking at protecting our oceans.

Our History focus is on the Roman Empire, looking at a comparison to Britain at the same time and how The Romans invaded and collapsed in their power. In Geography, we focus on the Europe continent, looking at map work using 4-figure grid referencing and physical features of Europe including the different biomes.

Our RE lessons will focus our Rights and Responsibilities and Beliefs and Questions, continuing to look at both the Christian and Islamic religions. Our mission statement, ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’ alongside our core school values of ‘Faith, Hope and Love’ will run throughout our learning as we consider what diversity, equality and inclusion looks like for us in year 5.

If you want to support your child you could help them to look at a world map and start identifying where countries and continents are located, perhaps also looking at certain features associated with each of the places.

In science we will study mixtures and separation and properties of materials, including reversible and irreversible changes. We will teach this through enquiry based lessons that require the children to pattern seek, research, classify and group, make observations and carry out fair testing.

In PE/Games we will focus on gymnastics and dance as well as tactical invasion games of Hockey and Tag Rugby. In Art we have a drawing unit looking at painting and mixed media and in DT we look at the design for an appropriate and engaging playground.

There will be opportunities for the children to share any additional knowledge over the course of the term including homework tasks and class based activities.Throughout the term we will be encouraging opportunities for oracy and drama as we seek to bring the curriculum alive for the children.
