Year 1 Summer Term Overview – Our Environment

This summer term, our whole-school focus is “Our Environment.” This theme will allow us to explore many fascinating aspects of history and geography, with a special focus on our local area.

Summer 1
In the first half of the term, we will be learning about the UK, including identifying where West Kirby is located. We will also learn about the bodies of water that surround us. Alongside this, children will explore both the human and physical features of our local area and school environment. They will develop their geographical skills by using compass points—North, South, East, and West—to describe the location of places in relation to the school.

In science, we will continue our learning about animals. Children will explore the different environments animals need to survive. In art, we will be exploring sculpture and learning about the work of the artist Louise Bourgeois.

Summer 2
In the second half of the term, our focus will be on Conservation. In science, children will learn about plants, including what they need to grow and survive. They will explore wild and garden flowers, as well as evergreen and deciduous trees.

To support this learning, we will be visiting Ness Botanic Gardens, where children will have the opportunity to explore a range of environments where animals live such as ponds, woodlands, and flower gardens.

In history, we will investigate the past of our local area, including Hickories, Ashton Park, the beach, and our school. In DT, the children will be making a smoothie, where they will practise key skills such as cutting and grating, as well as describing different tastes.
