Welcome to Autumn 1: ‘Super Me and Super You!’
Starting ‘big school’ is a huge and exciting milestone for our children! Because they are coming together from different settings and getting to know lots of new faces, our biggest priority right now is ensuring every child feels happy, safe, and settled in our school routines.
Our first topic this term is ‘Super Me and Super You’, where we will celebrate what makes each child unique and special.
Overarching Themes: Our Senses and Our Feelings
Throughout the entire year, much of our learning will link back to two core themes: our senses and our feelings. Connecting our topics to how children feel and experience the world makes learning personal, exciting, and easy for them to relate to.
What We Will Be Exploring This Term:
● All About Me and My Family: Children will share their hobbies, favourite foods, pets, and family lives. We will explore how our families are all different, but each one is special.
● Science and History Connections: We’ll investigate our 5 senses—learning what they are and why they are so important to us. In history, children will build their own personal timeline to begin understanding the past, present, and
future.
● Seasonal Changes: We will be stepping outside to observe the natural changes as we transition from Summer to Autumn.
● Imaginative Role Play: Our role-play spaces will include a ‘Home’ area
(reinforcing familiar routines and social interactions) and a ‘School’ area
(giving them space to build confidence and keep practising their new phonics,
maths and routines in a fun, relaxed setting).
● PSED and Communication Focus: We will focus heavily on speaking, listening, and building new friendships. As adults, we will be playing alongside the children—modelling, guiding, and extending their learning through
purposeful play.
Looking Ahead and Staying Connected
Every week, we cover specific objectives across all areas of the Early Years
curriculum—including Maths, Literacy, Phonics, Understanding the World, and
Expressive Arts and Design. Miss Cotterell and Mrs Neal will keep you updated weekly with details on what we’ve been up to, giving you fun ideas on how to support and celebrate your child's learning at home.
